Why you should learn Kendo from a CKF affiliated dojo

The Canadian Kendo Federation (CKF) is the official organization responsible for the development and promotion of Kendo in Canada.

Membership in the CKF allows you to attend tournaments, visit other CKF-affiliated dojos at no extra cost and most importantly, get graded for any rank above 1st Kyu.

A dojo has to apply to and be accepted into the CKF for it to display the CKF logo and have its students recognized as CKF members.

So, what does that mean for you?

Learning Kendo from a CKF-affliated dojo is like doing business with a company that is part of the local Chamber of Commerce or Better Business Bureau. A CKF-affiliated dojo is approved by the CKF because it teaches Kendo properly. Senior Sensei from other CKF dojos will visit and make sure that the instruction is being conducted correctly and if not, they will remedy the situation. This makes for better instructors AND better students.

(Note: We're a Canadian dojo. If your dojo is affiliated with a regional or national association recognized by the Japan Kendo Federation, then the comments below don't apply to you.)

What will you miss if you don't learn Kendo from a CKF-affiliated dojo?

  • You may not learn proper techniques.
  • You will not be able to participate in Kendo tournaments.
  • You will not be able to be officially graded above 2nd Kyu

If you are truly interested in learning Kendo, you must learn from a CFK-affiliated dojo. There are only two in Niagara (the other is the St. Catharines Kendo Club).
